Quick and Easy Homemade Apple and Oat Dog Treats Recipe

Updated: Jan 27

Waggy Bites Functional Dog Treats are the perfect daily treat and supplement solution, allowing you to feel good about what you give your dog while addressing specific health issues.

However, there are times when your furry friend deserves pure indulgence. Unfortunately, many store-bought treats are filled with preservatives and chemicals.

The ideal solution is to create homemade treats that are both nutritious and delicious.

Here’s an easy homemade apple dog treat recipe to get you started!

Ingredients:

  • 1 large apple, cored and grated (leave the skin on for extra nutrients)

  • 1½ cups old-fashioned oats

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour

  • 2 eggs

  • ⅓ cup unsweetened applesauce

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted

  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional, but dogs often love it)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

  2. In a food processor or blender, pulse the oats until they become a coarse flour.

  3. Mix the grated apple, eggs, applesauce, and melted coconut oil in a large bowl.

  4. Add the ground oats, whole wheat flour, and cinnamon. Mix until a dough forms. If it's too sticky, add a bit more flour; if too dry, add a splash of water.

  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ⅓ inch thickness.

  6. Cut into shapes or simply cut into small squares.

  7. Place on prepared baking sheets and bake for 22-25 minutes until firm and lightly golden.

  8. For crunchier treats, turn off the oven and leave them inside as it cools.

Storage:

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week at room temperature, or up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator. Can be frozen for up to 3 months.

Note:

  • These homemade apple oatmeal dog treats are particularly good for senior dogs or those with dental issues since they're not as hard as typical biscuits.

  • The apple provides natural sweetness and fiber, while the oats offer beneficial nutrients and help with digestion.

Ingredient swaps:

If your dog is a picky eater, you're managing allergies, or you're missing some pantry staples, make these easy ingredient swaps to make this recipe work for you and your pet!

  • Apple sauce - this contributes moisture, so ingredients like mashed banana or pumpkin puree are an easy substitute

  • Apple - if your dog prefers other fruits and veggies, you can swap in grated carrots or pears, or create a mixture of the fruits and veggies you have on hand (just make sure they're safe for dogs)

  • Whole wheat flour - in a pinch, you can use all purpose flour (but note that whole grains are healthier for dogs, just like for humans!)
